American Promise: Opportunity is Just the First Step

During the coming weeks, I'll be writing more about an upcoming documentary that sheds light on the promise, and the challenges, along the pathway to educational excellence for young African American males.

A documentary 13 years in the making, American Promise provides a rare look into the lives of two middle class Black families as they navigate the ups and downs of parenting and educating their sons. The filmmakers' goal is to empower boys, their parents and educators and help close the black male achievement gap.

I've seen this documentary a few times, and I highly recommend this if and when you get a chance to see it. I've also had the privilege of talking with the filmmakers, and highly recommend taking advantage of any opportunity you might have to meet and talk with them about the film.

American Promise opens theatrically in New York City on October 18, 2013.  Visit the list of theaters to find out when it will be screening in your city, or one near you. You can also find out how to host a screening if there isn't a current location near you.

Be sure and visit the dedicated page I've developed for additional information, including the official trailer for this documentary. You can also visit the film's website directly, at www.americanpromise.org.
